Revolutionizing BECU’s Banking Security with Microsoft 365 Zero-Trust Implementation

The Financial Services Client

The Boeing Employees’ Credit Union (BECU) is a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union committed to improving the financial well-being of their members and communities. Headquartered in Washington, BECU has over 60 locations across the United States.

The Challenge

BECU recently embarked on a multi-year journey to become the digitally powered banking cooperative, and one of the first endeavors in their digital transformation is a collaboration evolution featuring Microsoft 365 (M365), which will bring connectedness and efficiency to how BECU works and collaborates each day. After having completed a company-wide migration to Teams and Office 365, the next goal for the organization was to protect core banking assets via “network segmentation,” effectively separating core banking transactions and users from front office and knowledge workers.

The Solution

Cyclotron was selected as BECU’s Microsoft Partner to guide them through the full M365 migration program. As evidenced by the nearly 4 years of internal discussions and architecture conversations, network segmentation was a huge undertaking for BECU. However, thanks to the EMS E5 Security and Compliance stack, BECU would be able to achieve network segmentation by a move towards Zero-Trust architecture, by providing O365 users and knowledge workers cloud-authentication and protections at the apps, device, identity, and data level. Cyclotron proposed this architecture, and it was readily accepted by BECU, allowing them to move toward a more secure infrastructure.

“The partnership we have with Cyclotron is enabling us to make this security design a reality for BECU,”
Jim Jenkins
Director of Security at BECU

The Result

Hear how Jim Jenkins, BECU’s Director of Cybersecurity Architecture summarized the project: “Being one of the largest Credit Unions in the United States, BECU is subject to a myriad of financial regulatory requirements. Implementing Zero-Trust through Microsoft 365 requires an experienced partner with both technical knowledge and organizational change ability, and the partnership we have with Cyclotron is enabling us to make this security design a reality for BECU.”
